Something I have done too. But unless you stay up all night, night after night with your dog and gun?

How can you avoid the potential secondary poisoning of pets ?

Common sense plays a big part. Obviously put it where pets cant get access. Dogs aren't good at climbing. Not something a cat is likely to eat. And obviously it depends on the situation. I think a lot of this debate depends entirely on where the problem is. Rural, semi rural, urban? That obviously makes a big difference to the methods used.

The reason I like to think I know a lot on the topic is because I spent 15 years full time possum hunting. All year around. Trialed every possible lure and hunting method known.

Just for anyone that wants to know the ultimate lure we have tried nearly everything. From pepper to apples, to shaving cream believe it or not. Tried many different lures and nothing worked consistently expect one lure. One lure stood out from all others. We could put out poison lines where others had just poisoned and still pull big tallies. We had other hunters begging us to tell them our secret lure. We kept it a secret for many years.
The funny thing is its a very common lure. Post 15 is on to it.
