Cooked vege in compost

roys351, Jun 7, 10:57pm
is it ok or will I get overrun with rats and mice?

kids4ever, Jun 7, 11:08pm
if you have cats you are ok, they keep the mice away, but generally it's ok

Unless your putting a LOT if cooked veg into the compost , it's fine(like over 5 cups of cooked potatoes might be pushing it). Some of it will be eaten by birds, and the worms will get the rest. If you have a rat problem in your area, lift some compost off, and put the veg in the centre. Then cover it over. The worms will get it first.

What makes you think that attracts rats? Rats aren't that fussy - they'll eat raw veges, scraps, anything at all.

Compost should be covered anyway to keep out pests and keep heat in.

Exactly, just having a compost bin or even just a pile of weeds can attract rodents, (why do you think it would only be rats?).
Better concrete your whole section ASAP & that way you won't need a compost bin

Frankly, rats will eat the earthworms too. It's just one of those things people say - don't put such and such in your compost, etc.
The point is if you regularly leave something out that's attractive to rats and mice, some enterprising critter is going to make a home nearby and raise a family. And you really want to avoid that. So the general advice is not to start leaving food out, as it can possibly become a bad habit.
See how long this explanation takes, as opposed to Don't put X in the compost?

Meat, fat, bones and seeds don't go into my compost.
Everything else does and have been doing that for fifty years.
It comes out so beautiful one could eat it!
