i was told to pick off the flower petals from around the new fruit so as to concentrate energies on the fruit. is this right!

lil-toes, that seems a bit ott to me, the petals will just shrivel up once they have done their job, I have heard you aremeant to pick off the early flowers soon after planting /early in the season, to help the plant grow strong before it has to put energy into fruiting, but by now they should be going for it.

Maybe they meant pick the new flowers in winter to help the plant establish. By now your strawberries should be up and running, so apart from watering well and protecting from birds, you don't need to do much except harvest.

Don't you believe it!I have seen the birds gleefully swinging away in the baskets while having a fine feed.Hubby has made me beautiful raised beds and put netting roofs on them so I can just lift them up to pick the berries.

ype i did mine earlier this year - started with 3 plants and now have 10 with the most fantastic strabs growing - picking them straight out of the garden and eating them there and then - yummm - these days i seem to have my dessert long before dinner LOL

Amazing! I have so many strawberries I could set up a roadside stall. LOL

My poor strawbs were attacked and eaten one night by 4 very bad jersey cows! Brats managed to open the gate to the veggie garden and eat pretty much everything in sight! BUT although my strawbs are well behind schedule, every plant is now smothered in flowers and tiny fruit, so anticipating a good crop soon.

anyone got strawberry plants forsale im after some more and raspberry plants

tahnasha, Dec 13, 10:15am
I was watching the Home and Garden show on TV a couple of night ago, and they had a really easy way of growing strawberries. They just got a bag of potting mix, poked some holes in the plastic and planted the strawberries into that.I thought easy as, cos then the plastic is already there under them, they are off the ground as well. They got a trolley thing with wheels and put the bag on that, so they could just wheel it around to get the most sun.

Good idea - you might want to lift the bag off the ground with a few pieces of wood so the drainage is good(spike the underneath of the bag first) - can't have the berries swimming.
