Planted seeds back in August (in small hothouse). Cam up great and are stuck at about 2 inches high. Haven't grown or died in a long time. Never had this before. Think I will have to buy tomato plants instead. Oh, and the courgettes, out of 6 seeds only one has come through. Is it possible to have 'dud' seeds? These were form Egmont and usually have good luck with them

Yes planted in new seed raising mix- am so disappointed. Have emailed Egmont in case there have been other people having the same problem.

If growing tomatoes from seed, I find it best to get them started in small pots, then plant out.

The tomatoes were planted in a 6 cell container, and the courgettes in individual peat pots.

You could try moving them into small pots

are they still in the cell pots? Seed raising mix has very low nutrients, so they need to get either regular liquid feeds or potted on into something with fertiliser once they have their second set of leaves.

A large grafted tomato at Mitre 10 costs $14, so that plant has to produce 5 kilos of fruit to make it economical. My best tomatoes come from those that self seed. I even got the yellow ones even though I'd never planted them. I had this problem last year, whereas this year the same packet of seeds has sprouted, go figure?

The following is my opinion only. Like everyone, I am allowed a personal opinion, and this is it (no offence to anyone is intended):
Grafted is bollocks in my opinion, This is one of the reasons we get fantastic looking fruit in the supermarkets and pay the world for it, but it has crap texture and no taste.
What are we gonna do for food after the comet or the earthquake and/or tsunami strikes? Can't grow anything reliably from seeds from grafted or GE fruit. The whole GE and grafted fruit industry is reliant on us opening our wallets for good looking (but tasteless!) fruit, and upon the industry having to provide us those expensive grafted seedlings and seeds and fruit every year from now till kingdom come. These people aren't stupid. they are big corporates that want an income for life.
Yep. Ok,,, maybe the comet won't come this decade or next. But on the basis of real taste alone, we should be shunning all the GE and grafted produce and plants and enjoying real fruit taste (from spotty miss-shapen fruit!) instead of the bland perfect looking sh!t the supermarkets and our grafted fruit plants throw up.

Seed raising mix is just that. Its designed for sprouting seeds. Plant raising mix has more "feed" advailable or added to it. Seeds usually have enough "goodness" in their pods to start them but not to sustain the growth cycle

I usually buy a punnet of 6 tomato plants ("Beefsteak" are my choice) as soon as they are on the market in early September. I immediately transplant them into individual larger pots with good potting mix & add in some blood & bone & sheep pellets. I grow these on in a sheltered spot secure from frost, & then plant them out about Labour weekend with more b&b etc. By now they have a very strong root system, & they do really well.
