What is the best plum tree variety to plant? My criteria: I'm In Auckland, Requires no spray, Happy to prune, Have room for two large trees - would prefer two different trees to lengthen fruiting season - but must self of cross pollinate. Happy to pay for quality trees. Must be available now!

Personally I always had Black Doris. 2. 18 years after we moved, those trees were still doing well. Friends dad put some in their place, he died long ago, trees must be about 405 years old now, still producing like mad and none of them living in that place now look after them with sprays or anything. They had a whole heap of different varieties. in Auckland, on a 1/2 acre section in Glendene. They're still there.

I agree about Hawera, delicious eating fresh and cooked. Hawera is also self fertile.
