Pruning rosemary

gag5, Mar 2, 4:28am
HI.Rosemary bushes have grown too tall - over 6ft tall. Much as I love them they need to come down a bit. it is a hedge & a lot of long odd shaped branches coming out in all directions. have started to cut these ones back, even back to a main branch but wondered if it will end up being even bushier & more out of control. I thought to deal with the 'sides' of the hedge first & then just trim along the top.
Anyone got the right advice on rosemary?
Thanks

It is unlikely rosemary will survive a hard prune back to mainly bare wood. They prefer to be left with plenty of greenery for regrowth.

Yes it will bush out more. but you can cut away as much as you like, it sure won't hurt it.
I chop bits of mine quite often. to keep it in shape - mine is being used as a hedge.

Prune off some good size branches and use them for skewers, soaking first, for the bbq. As long as the plant is not cut into the bare wood they will survive as very tough plants generally. Lucky you to have such a high plant - I am still waiting for mine to get that high and make a great hedge.

Thanks maclad. I did wonder about that - I think already there is a bit of bare wood areas in teh middle & all the green growth is at the top or end of the multidirectional branches, which is what I want to cut back . Will get back to it tomorrow for another try. Will try to keep as much green as possible.
fronsac - great idea for the bbq - tks!

I regularly hack my rosemary back quite drastically and it always comes back with vengeance! Always some greenery left on it. But not much at times!
