But hes snoozing under the covers, me too, but the wife hears a noise like that in the middle of the night. We googled "carpet beetles" but they don't have that sound, and we didn't see any carpet beetle signs as per google. Everything seems normal. Any ideas what this could be?

Hmmm. Crawled under and the batts insulation, which is 10 months old looks undisturbed and flat and new. No mouse poo.

Under? Rats can live in the ceiling, in the walls, anywhere. Could be possums on the roof too?

Hedgehogs squeezing their way under a tin fence make a similar noise. Took me 5 months of intermittently hearing that noise to work out what it was. The noise would happen from early evening to middle of the night.
