Tips for internal stairs please

Hi, I intend to install internal stairs from used sources. What factors/ issues do I need to be wary of? Your experiences would be useful too. Thanks

how do you currently get to your second level if you don't have stairs?

Are you getting a building consent?. One of the requirements of a legal set of stairs is that the risers [ tread height] can not vary by plus or minus 5mm,so if you are thinking of whacking a bit off the first riser to make it work then it won't pass.Next tip,pay a stair specialist to design the job for you.

First is to work out where they will go and imagine how the opening on our ceiling will be supported.

Then work out number of steps you will need by dividing floor to floor distance to have step hight of between 170 to 200mm.

If you are up to it, draw an accurate scale drawing including where the downstairs ceiling is penetrated. Then carefully measure 2,0 metres above every tread to verify that there is headroom when passing between floors.

Measure the overall height and find stairs that match it as near to perfectly as possible. Any variation over 5mm or so is best placed at the bottom because tripping up the stairs from the bottom is much less dangerous than tripping down from the top.

Don't trip on the way down, have good lighting

Excellent info thus far. Thank you!

jonners2013, Our living quarters sit above the garage/ rumpus/ laundry/ 3rd bedroom - access the top by external staircase. Keen to have internal access so that have better linkage to all facilities.

Aware of consent - best not ignore (sigh!)

Getting in specialist for sure.

Will be buying a used stair case - what do I need to watch out for (rot, inconsistencies etc)?

You are doing the right thing getting a building consent and the draught man you use will draw up the stairs that will suit the house layout. You may require winders [kites] if a straight flight won't fit. The chances of a second hand one working out are pretty slim and if it has to be altered then that cost has to be taken into account. The height is important because if you have to fiddle with the first riser to make it fit the the building inspector will pick it up when he comes to sign it off, they do check and they do measure the 2m headroom. If you can use an old one check very carefully for borer espiecally if it is rimu. Best of luck with your project.

If you are restricted for space, check out "samba stairs".

2R + G = 575mm - 635mm, where R is the individual riser height and G is the individual tread width.
