enamel, or acrylic? Has it been mixed regularly? Can you mix it really thoroughly now?

Sealed properly, quite a while. So long as it hasn't turned to chewing gum, you can still use it.

For paint to last a very long time, add a little water to water based paint before storage, and a little thinner to spirit based paint for the same result always making sure lid is firmly closed.

Thanks, its water based acrylic roof paint. It looks fine, stirable and no lumps. I just didnt want to use all that effort if the paint wouldnt last. But I have 1/2 of a big bucket. Ill try it on the weekend.

If its a wee way down the tin push some glad wrap onto it and up the sides a little bit. Works with water based but not sure weather gladwrap would handle long term conection to oil based paint.
