Actually lichen has a very shallow grip on rocks, and no roots as we normally understand them - here, check this out and be as amazed as I was when I first found out what they are.

Strange isn't it that on this MB one is regularly asked for authorities, citations etc. and when they are delivered, even pre emptively in anticipation, then the critisism turns to the old saw of "cutting and pasting" . Seems some can never be satisfied.
