absolutely its a waste of energy.
but this is also where the catch22 of modern housing comes in. if its well sealed you end up with moisture problems and the solution is to install ventilation or open a window, either way your loosing heat.

Actually quite wrong. You want the air to recirculate so that you are just topping up the heat lost in the remote rooms.

what is actually wrong?

air has to circulate other wise no hot air will be pumped into the room.
you need to keep doors closed to keep the heat in otherwise your trying to heat the whole house which just won't work. with doors closed air is going to get pushed out of whatever gap there is including out any gaps around windows.
while its beneficial to have the air recirc back to the main room, its not going to happen unless the room is well sealed and there is a path back. eg badly fitted doors.
tho i could imagen that if you want to get fussy, you could plumb in a return vent. have a pickup by the floor and piped back to the main room. but that would be difficult to do.
