Paint Tinting

I had chosen a Resene colour for my roof but a contractor has specified Wattyl Solagard paint to be used. How straightforward is it to specify another brand's colour and get the right shade. I have heard horror stories of colours differing once up. Any tips for ensuring a match? Is it safer to just choose a Wattyl colour?

No,most reputable paint retailers, ie,resene, dulux and wattyl have access to all available colours.Only the newest colours out usually can't be tinted by another brand straight away.Yr painter probably has. a good deal at wattyl which he's hoping to make a bigger profit off,or an excess of wattyl paint.i know resene can tint from wattyl and dulux and vice versa, though dulux seem to be the ones to get colour matches bang on.resene,so,so.

I used to colour match for British Paints.
Mostly you can match it no problem.

So long as the base tint isn't totally different. Take your sample in and ask them to do it on a small tin, then go home and try it.

Thanks kletis1, that's encouraging. The colour is Resene Element, which is itself a dupe for Colorsteel Flaxpod. See: http://www.resene.co.nz/swatches/preview.php?chart=Resene%20Roof%20systems%20chart%20%282014%29&brand=Resene&name=Element
I already have fences that colour so I want to the roof to match.
