Streak marks in paint from moisture

millerz08, Sep 28, 12:13pm
We painted the bathroom about 4 weeks ago.
Wall were sanded, undercoat/seal applied, then the paint. A day was given between coats to allow it to dry well between coats.
The bathroom was not used at all for the first 7 days (as advised by paintshop).

Now 4 weeks later Im noticing streak marks from moisture in on the walls. They walls are medium grey, and the streaks are light. The room is not damp yet they are showing. It is ventilated, and never had this issue before painting.

What will be the cause!

Didn't use that spacecoat did you, Have noticed that can look a bit streaky, and I'm not talking in a wet area.
Wonder if it was old paint and didn't mix well.

No it was Resene bathroom enamel.
The undercoat were recommended was Resene smooth surface sealer, so we used that.

The paint was purchased from the Resene paint shop and used that week, so it should not have been old.

Its a shame the paint looks streaky now.

was it resene " kitchen n bathroom"!.

if so.that is also just water based enamel. no good. I'm a tredey and I always use oil based enamel in wet areas. it doesn't streak.

Im not sure if it was kitchen and bathroom, I just asked for enamel bathroom paint.
It was water based though, sounds like that may be the issue then.

yep for sure. you can re-do it with oil based enamel tho. leave it for a couple weeks, sand it with 120 grit so you have a good flat finish. you can use acrylic undercoat, leave it for 48 hours then semi-gloss oil based enamel.

Thanks for that, I will get my husband to read this.
Hopefully it turns out better next time!

use either a foam roller or a short (8mm) pile enamel roller.

go to resene, get paint cleaner in a pump bottle (about $6) and follow directions. its a known problem, resene and dulux both have the same problem. it is something that leeches out, will probably onlyhappen a couple of times if at all again. i have had a go at resene, but falls on deaf ears.will look fine once wiped down.

Then invest in a showerdome and you will NEVER have that problem again.

you have used flat or satin finish rather than semi gloss.I have to redo all of mne this summer for the samereason, and I should no better, but it looks so good in a flat finish.

ITS called surfactant leachingcaused by water droplets sitting on fresh paint.Resene recommends that you wash down the walls for seven days after having shower.the only way to avoid the problem is to use oil based paint which is more harmful to your health.

Another way to not get surfactant leaching; Resene have just released an oil based, low odour, low sheen paint specifically to get around the problems. Should be popular with the old school painters.

Don't Resene guarantee their paints! I'd be asking the store to take a look and replace the paint at least.

Paint guaranteed - but environmental problems are in the hands of someone greater. I used the original batch of Space Coat and with plenty of ventilation/warm air circulation and a towel off to get rid of any moisture that may have settled on the top part of the wall directly over the shower - no problems at all - how long ago - 7 years.Very pleased.I did have to retrain the family not to fill the room up with warm wet air from shower or bath and then expect a window opened to a inch or so to work miracles in removing moisture- no problems now.
