can I cut it off the vine now! its pretty hard and HUGE biggest we have ever grown I also have grey pumpkins some are very light in colour but again a big one is very grey and hard can I pick that also, do they ripen once picked! thanks

They do not ripen after picking so make sure it is ready.

The vine needs to be dying off, Id say leave it longer.

And leave the stem on the pumpkin where it attaches too, helps it keep longer.

You usually look for changes in the stem of the pumpkin, it goes kind of hard, and withered and changes in colour.When it no longer looks lovely and fresh then I pick them.
No, they dont ripen once picked, but they will keep all winter in a cool place like a garage provided they are free from blemishes, holes etc.You can wash the skin in a light bleach solution to kill any fungi etc which may harm it and it willkeep for 6months or so
