LOL yep. Had a friend many years ago that was a total passive & wouldn't even kill household spiders. used to go on & ON & ON for many years about how natural & good her tank water was.
(Living next door to a corn cropping farm).
1 year I got asked to clean the tank out because the water flow stopped. Umm & MMMM
House roof only had speckles of old red lead paint on it. Guttering was rotten 2 dead birds in that guttering Numerous blocks of concrete/ wood & the left overs of the galv/tin lid INSIDE the tank & just over a foot of sludge in the bottom.

Previous poster was correct in stating that chlorine at correct level is odourless, however in public pools chlorine combines with ammonia to form chloramines which smell. Urine supplies ammonia, correct way to solve is to SHOCK dose with chlorine! Chloramines and also incorrct ph causes stinging eyes, another fault wrongly attributed to chlorine.

So if it's too strong, then how would you know without a test kit. What are the indicators of too much.

It sounds like there are way to many variables to know if bleach would be doing any good let alone causing harm. From my knowledge of working in a laboratory, having a swimming pool which I look after and investigating alternatives to bleach use in an early childhood centre I know two very basic things. That bleach is quickly inactivated by proteins and dirt and that it is inactive after 24hours as a sterilising agent. So I guess it might be useful as a one off shock to kill the bugs if you got the concentration right and your tank was recently cleaned.

Or you could just use the POUR N GO product I mentioned in #11
