After we fished out a rotten hedgehog from our tank we were advised to throw in about half a cup of swimming pool chlorine. Seemed to do the trick, got rid of the stink over night

Read the bottle label carefully. I just added some janola to my fountain, went outside 30 minutes later and discovered there was foam EVERYWHERE. Re-read the label and discovered the words 'New and improved formula'. Why some idiot would think adding a foaming agent to bleach would improve it is beyond me and heaven only knows what else is in it now.

Janola says 1/2 cup per litre. You'd need masses of it. Just buy Tank products.
Chlorine - sunlight kills it so if you do it at night, then let the sun on it.
3 litres would be fine, too much and your cup of tea may taste funny- I know from experience.

Best options would be to ring your local swimming pool admin or a swimming pool shop or even go down to 1 of the above (which would be better) & ask them.
As far as DIY goes, I would pour in 500mil, (on a full 20,000ltr tank) give it a stir up & use your nose. If you can't smell the chlorine after a couple of minutes, then it's not strong enough.
Think about it from when you have been swimming in public pools, you always knew when there was too much chlorine in the water by the strong smell

Just a caution re tank products. I had one tank cleaner guy recommend this. Another said they stopped selling it as there were now links to cancer. Not sure on his evidence but if they stopped selling it, it must have been significant. We use a uv lamp sterilizer. Our tank was thoughtfully positioned below ground level in a dip next to our septic field!
I put 1.5L of janola in our 20000l tank, we are all still alive. Use some sort of paddle to get your water moving in the tank before you slowly tip in the Janola

We were given this advice years ago for use in treating water while camping. 5ml Janola/ 20 litres water. Add 2x Sodium Thiosulphate crystals (form chemist) to remove the janola taste/odour. Extrapolated out, that becomes 5 litres Janola / 20,000 litres water. This suggests that most of the above advice is seriously under dosing, thereby not sanitising the water.

According to our swimming pool instructions if you can smell chlorine in the water you have not put in enough.
Our pool chlorine stuff says 80gm to 10,000 ltrs.Grab some from Bunnings/Mitre10 etc.Its dirt cheapo.
If you can disolve the chlorine in a 20ltr bucket so you are chucking in fluid rather than solids and as said above try and get the water moving before you put it in
Im guessing that you would have to put in Kilos of the stuff before it would harm you.

Not recommended to add bleach to your tankwater- generally because most ppl's tankwater contains significant amounts of organic matter, combined with hypochlorite forms organochlorines. Google them for why you shouldnt. However if you have clean roof/gutters/tank/water then there's much less risk. Many tank owners don't however ! Use UV sterilisation and decent filters to clean up your water.

a quick google is quite scary but complicated, could you elaborate please.
Interesting that in the section "6 Treatment Methods" most suggest Chlorine as 1 of the treatments

Everytime I CAN clearly smell chlorine, it's been at a level that can & does irritate skin & or at least eyes. The stronger the smell = a higher concentration. Factorys use that stuff to burn off bacteria on food processing equipment./floors/inside pipework etc Raw damp chlorine power/ paste WILL burn skin & rot cloth. Chlorine vapor burns lungs. it's a good tool in water in mild doses but isn't pretty in higher concentrations for humans

For many years my family drank tank water without treating it in any way, and never got sick from it as far as I can recall. I didn't even know that people put chlorine bleach into their tanks.
Maybe birds and possums carry more disease these days, or maybe people are more susceptible!
The main downside with tank water, as far as I know, is that 'soft' water is not as good for us as 'hard' water which has naturally occurring minerals. There is apparently a link between drinking soft (rain) water and increased heart disease.

If you are going to use Calcium Hypochlorite ( swimming pool chlorine) it must be at 65% available chlorine with no other additives according to Ministry Of Health Book .
