Weatherboard joints - how to waterproof them?

while stripping my weatherboard to bare wood, I discovered that the weatherboard vertical joints are slightly rotten due to water intrusion. What do you do to prevent water entering the joints! I know you can use sealants, but it there a flashing you can buy to cover the joints!

You can buy metal flashings for various sizes of weatherboard. They have prepunched holes in them.
Or if you are a real cheapskate like me you will cut up some galvanised iron, perhaps from a sheet of roofing, and make your own flashings
