Can a Rangehood go in front of a window

mbi15, Feb 26, 3:58am
I'm looking at renovating the kitchen with a bit of a redesign, I have limited space, and just wondering if a rangehood can go infront of a window?Obviously with cooktop underneath, that way I could move the sink from there to be in the island, as a rangehood over an island would get in the way I think.

Are there any NZ law etc that you have to follow when installing theseethings?

Why not install a downdraft thing.

I don't think you can have a stove/cooktop under a window so pointless having the rangehood there.

Had a cooktop under a window in a previous house for 38 years - extractor fan was embeded in window - not ideal but can be done and I don't know of any new regulation as to why not. Capricorngirl

Why not a ceiling mount extract fan? Discrete and ideal if window in way. Smooth air do them.

Normally too high to work as an extractor fan properly

There are units designed to work on the ceiling. But you pay the price for it.

our stove/cooktop is under a window. I don't have range hood though, just open the window of needed

It's only Gas cooktops that have exclusion zones near open windows. Electric no issues as far as I'm aware.

There were regs for electric stoves/etc being placed under a window that was on an outside wall and could be opened. Obviously if rain could come in when no humans were around then the electrics at the back of the stove could be a problem.

Also someone could be just walking past the open window and reach in and pinch the nice bit of bacon you have in the pan !

Yes there's that too, or the whole pan with the whole shebang of bacon, eggs, tomatoes and potatoes. and the next day come back for the corned beef.

We had problems with starlings trying and trying and trying to build a nest in the little place where the fan exits the house. Covered it up etc and they kept coming back. finally they gave up but you sure have to admire their perseverance!

That was dinner, minus the spuds. Fattening things, spuds.

Says who?

I'd be concerned about window coverings in such close proximity being a fire hazard.

why not move the window
