Possible soil contamination

Any chemicals added to a swimming pool for pool health at normal levels, because a pool by definition has to 'human/safe' would be highly unlikely to kill shrubs. However oversaturation can easily and readily be a plant killer as also is sodium chloride at levels safe for humans. If the pool was/is salt water simply flush the soil after the leak is fixed. If your plants were drowned be patient. In either case a soil test is unlikely to tell you anything if you do not know what you are looking for and will cost rather a lot. Spend a few dollars on some cheap plants like sweet peas or tomatoes etc. They will quickly give you a no or go.

Thanks for your comments steptoesnr - sodium chloride was used I understand. Problem is there is still water pooling into the garden - to explain their ground level is approx 1m higher than ours with a wooden retaining wall below the now over 8ft fence. The garden on our side is approx. 1m wide and the area effected is about 12 metres long (we are a r.o.w. section) I had planted it roughly 7 years ago with camelias, hibiscus and other flowering shrubs, all of which were doing well before this happened.

Regarding the pooling of water , I am thinking of installing a field drain on our side to moderate the problem. At present when it rains water pours across the driveway making it slippery. In the 10 years we have lived here this never happened even in teeming rain before the neighbours installed the pool. Capricorngirl

I was slightly 'tongue in cheek' when I said sodium chloride-read that as 'salt water'. Whichever is the case plants will drown in your described situation and that will only be ameliorated by removal of the cause as you said-drainage.But place the drainage on your topside so the water does not percolate thru your soil.

So their pool is still leaking and soaking your garden?

Some months ago neighbours installed a pool. Said pool leaked thru the lights on sides. Result was it overflowed thru fence into our driveway garden, gradually killing all the shrubs. Chemicals had been added to the pool before this happened to get the Ph balance.

Before we get the neighbours to replace the shrubs which they have finally agreed to, should the soil be tested? It would be stupid to replant and then have everything die off because of contamination. Can anybody give advice regarding this? Capricorngirl

I would soil test a non-contaminated area as well as the contaminated area, then compare the results.

Really? I had a pool for 18 years, we drained it into garden a few times, never killed anything at all.

Was it a salt water pool?

Yeah, they show them to the neighbours for their consideration also.

Perhaps the pool was over chemicalised! I have the feeling that the pool company were "cowboys" somewhat with some of the things they did. So the consensus is that it may be good sense to have the soil tested! Capricorngirl
