Atlas oven won't turn off

My old Atlas Crestwood 610 oven will start off baking normally, then when it heats up it stops turning the elements off, gets too hot and has to be switched off at the wall breaker. When it gets like this, the warmer tray light glows dimly as well as the oven light beiong on, which is strange.
I am thinking it is the oven thermostat/gas wire element as in the past cleaning the exposed thermostat wire end has helped.
What do you experts think? Should I suspect the elements also, could an element problem cause this not turning off behaviour? Google results were confusing.
I have stopped using the oven until it is fixed and it has to be DIY. I will try to get a generic thermostat if necessary.

The oven fault sounds like a faulty thermostat. But the oven light glowing when turned off is a concern. Obviously the switch is not disconnecting the oven from the power as it should be. You should get an electrician to check and test the wiring and switch to the oven, even if you are insisting on trying to fix the oven DIY without a clue.

If you need any convincing. just imagine yourself filling out the insurance claim form like "I repaired the oven myself 3 months ago, but it still went on fire. "

A good classic over, don't biff it.

Thermostat and oven switch (not elements) need replaced. About $125 worth of bits and an hours work to fit them.

Thank you tegretol.
Thermostat and switch are next. First the upper oven element just failed continuity test so I am searching for a replacement, I was planning to run it first with new upper element and see if there is an improvement.
The existing upper element was 800W but I think I can use a higher wattage one without problem, right?

Nope - if you fit anything that's not OEM then don't bother paying your insurance premiums.

if you are spending $125.00 then thats just the start of $$$$$, ditch it bite the bullet upgrade it.

Bollox. These are a good old solid unit and worth maintaining. What would you suggest the OP does - spend $1000 and buy some piece of cheap crap manufactured under license in China that would last 2-3 years? Or spend $3000 on a decent unit from Europe? If it were my oven, I'd fix it and enjoy the quality of it.
