Patio are generally smaller type of bush ideal for pots, etc, where as the carpet rose spreads out like a ground cover, hence the name.

I was expecting my carpet roses to be ground cover but they turned out like small shrubs and very bushy. Maybe I was supposed to stake them to the ground ?

Did you trim them back by about 2/3rds after flowering has finished. Hedge clippers will do . straight across the top like a haircut.

I trim the carpet roses with the hedge clippers, SNIP. That keeps them low growing, if you leave them they become a small bush. I have a patio rose too, just like a miniature version, with tiny roses.
