Has anyone used the Yates Zero Tough Weedkiller as seen on TV?
And if so did it work? Every time I look out the window I start swearing- it's
not good for my blood pressure,,,,

Use ordinary glyphosate 360 at 3% but add a penetrant. I use a product called Penetra. You may need to go to a proper horticultural chemical store to get the Penetra. It works 100% and it takes a good 3 years for any bits that I can't get at to regrow.

I've only used glycophosphate once and never seen the ivy again. but the convulvolous keeps coming back.

smiler127, Oct 15, 12:31pm
I've used glyphosate 360 + penetrant on ivy for the last 2 years, it's acting like a food! I've even filled little containers and stuck the roots and tendrils in it. They don't die, just take off :(
I can't pull it off or out, I'm allergic to the dust and pollen, as soon as I start to move it, off I go.
At my wits end with it.

I just use standard weed killer. I have a 6 ft wire fence that has had ivy growing on it for years and for the last 3 yrs have been trying to get rid of it. Weed killer sprayed on any leaves weekly and i have taken to the trunks with a saw. each rubbish day I fill the bin with the dead bits and it looks terrible but I am getting there. Mainly trunks and branches visible now but the new growth still manages to appear. Neighbours must hate it but I am doing what I can afford to do and physically do. Maybe by this time next yr I will be thinking of fencing
ETA. it is growing on the other side of a camelia hedge so I have to watch any regrowth coming up thru that.

Thank you all. Mmmm. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup I think. so I guess the Yates stuff is Roundup under another name.

I tried weed weapon and all it did was burn some of the leaves. But I can only spray what is on my side of the fence.
This plant gives a growth spirt in early spring and if you spray then, the new leaves are more susceptible to the spray as they have a less waxy surface than older leaves for the spray to stick to.
I have just started to repair our fence as the ivy next door is pushing the palings off. I approached the neighbor and asked if it was ok to cut the vines that were wrapped around the fence rails (technically they were now growing on my side so probably could cut them anyway) He was very obliging.
Maybe ask the neighbor (if it is not in your section).
There are products that you can apply to the stumps to help stop regrowth.
That Yates spray is overpriced - I think the price is $17 for a (very) small pre-mixed sprayer.

Nothing will kill established ivy except Tordon 2G granules. Chop the bigger branches open at 45 degrees with a knife, poke some granules in then tape the joint back up. Guarantee will never return. 2G is specifically for woody things.

jan2242, Oct 17, 9:52am
tegretol, will that work on privet? Usually pull them out when little but have a huge one that has grown behind shrubs and is too big to dig out. I hate privet!

tegretol, Oct 17, 11:19am
Absolutely. It works best on anything woody, have used it sucessfully on all manner of things including poplar trees, gorse, ivy. The more woody it is, the better it works.

littletoottoot, Oct 17, 11:35am
I used Yates Woody Weedkiller to kill ivy. It works!

rsr72, Oct 17, 12:39pm
Roundup, but as with any glossy-leaf plant, you should add a drop or two of household detergent , dish detergent etc. to act as a penetrant into the leaves.

tegretol, Oct 17, 2:02pm
It still won't kill the base stems. only the peripheral bits. Waste of time. You do know how roundup works I assume?

rsr72, Oct 17, 5:18pm
#13- I use far more often over a far greater variety of plants than most people and yourself.
It works every time and for every use without fail for me.
You really know little about using it it seems to me.

Have a read of the labels
Anything with "Metsulferon-methyl"-
in it is for heavy/ woody weeds including Gorse/Broom & other woody weeds/ shrubs/ blackberry etc.

It's a slow acting fully absorbed poison that works on the root system.
By the time the tops start to die down, the plant is well stuffed.
Any sort of vine plant needs this for best effect.

The most common name is "Escort" but it's an expensive brand.
Other brands are far cheaper & the same mix.

Meturon

Roundup .
The right temps, no wind & a good coverage will knock just about anything back but normally have to reapply when the plants re-shoot & it gets them that time.
Done a lot of that myself with woody weeds, but only gives the likes of Gorse a headache for a few months.

The "Metsulfuron" range of sprays don't generally kill grass (stunt but not kill), so can be a lot better for those grassy area's

tegretol, Oct 17, 8:08pm
Haha!

In case you didn't know, Roundup works by speeding up the normal life cycle of the plant. In the case of ivy, it's lifecycle is incredibly long and thus roundup only wilts local leaves. If ya really want to nuke it, put something more toxics (like Tordon 2G) into the systemic system of the plant, ie into the woody branches right down near the ground. Been there done that for many years.

tegretol, Oct 17, 8:09pm
Exactly.

lythande1, Oct 17, 10:38pm
With the nasty weeds, cut the plant first.
Then apply. Straight glysophate is pretty useless but the mixes are OK.
It may take more than application, took me a year to kill the neighbours privet, it sprouted over and over, but I got it finally.
(He'd cut them down, and on our fence line, so yes, I had permission).

docsportello, Oct 18, 7:43am
Weed weapon is good. It kills everything. oh except the Ivy you spray it on. It washes all over the place when it rains, even a week later, and keeps on killing for a couple of months. Company that sells it says its just round up, not at all translocatable or selective, plus some herbs and spices, but it isn't. I use a spade now.

carol113, Oct 18, 8:25am
Can somebody please tell me where you can buy the Tordon 2g Capsules at all please.

carol113, Oct 18, 8:27am
My neighbour has what I think to be Potato vine growing along the fenceline whch I really want to get rid of as well as the Blimin Ivy!

tegretol, Nov 3, 12:08am
Did that work?

friendly_prawn, Nov 3, 7:20am
I tried weed weapon and it failed miserably. So I used mitre10's number 8 weed killer, very cheap. I used it at double strength. i added in amitrole at double strength. I also found the main trunk of the ivy and cut it off at ground level and sprayed the stump.

Problem solved. No more ivy.

carol113, Nov 3, 11:15am
Going to be trying it this weekend as have been working last 2. What sort of tape do you put on the branch please
