Repairing outdoor chairs

karrie3, Jan 29, 9:10pm
I have a wooden outdoor set and the chairs are coming apart at the seams. it's pretty old and faded to a silvery grey, but I like the set and want to try to fix it. There are little peg things holding the seat pieces together and they're coming out.
Can I buy new ones, and what are they called?
And also I notice that they're bigger in the middle than the hole so wonder how they'll fit?
Many thanks if anyone can help:-)

Dowels, they're tapped in with a mallet & are supposed to be a snug fit. I think you can also put a bit of PVA in with them. Usually they get loose over time as the timbers dry up.

Dowels, biscuits. I'll check out Bunnings etc now that I know what to search for, thank you!

For clamping, those or similar are great to glue/reglue chairs.

Problem will be finding dowels that are decay proof. Most of the local ones will be pine or birch, and they only last a few years in NZ climate.

Know any local woodworker than can make you some new pegs from Lawson or Mac that will last for a good while, then tap those in with some Gorilla (polyurethane) glue.
