Have purchased some, going to plant them in pots.Have some all purpose potting mix,thinking off adding aged hen manure and old balage to the mix,your thoughts please,never had peonies before,any other tips,thanks

http://homeguides.sfgate.com/grow-peony-pot-41756.html Take a look at this site. Recommends free draining soil so I do not think I would be adding too much organic matter/compost to the mix. You are so lucky to be able to grow them but guess up here we grow things you would like to grow as well. Some very lovely cold climate plants.

dont add manure as dont like you are out here why not plant into ground as love the cold and snow as mine do

One of the most critical things and it was not mentioned at all in the link above is that tubers should be planted JUST below the surface of the soil - no more than an inch or so. If you plant them deeper, they will just grow foliage - no flower. And I agree wholeheartedly with bobcat_6 - plant them in the ground and be done with it - they'll do so much better. Don't mulch over them either as then they'll be too deep. Soil must be free draining - they'll rot if they are waterlogged.
