I want to build a basic wooden box about the size of a microwave. What kind of wood should I use? I went to mitre10 and bunnings but other than MDF and plywood everything else is quite expensive and I want something that looks decent as it's going with my desk. Any places in Auckland I can go to?

What are you making? If your desk is a laminate you can often find something with the same finish in op shops. I've cut up $10 filing cabinets at times.

It's just a small box to extend my desk, no legs as it's sitting on another box. I'll use some MDF as shelves on the inside. It is a laminate so that's a good idea, but I want to make something a bit better if possible.

Laminate of a solid colour, (same for the shelves), with a timber trim on the edges can look good. I like black Melteca type board with rimu edging for example.

Is there any other types of wood besides laminate I can use?

Laminate, plywood or mdf are boards wide enough for cabinet-making;
The alternative is to use real timber and glue/join them together to get the width you need.

Have a look at auction 1596055678. Some random 6x1 Macrocarpa seconds, but it would do what you want, and it's all dressed and ready to use.
Looks a lot like Kauri when it's varnished up.
