Hi Stevee. mine came too. I finally got time to sort my Gardener magazines out today to get a chance to read them . I kept getting tempted by interesting articles when I needed to be tidying and organising. I stayed with the organisingthough. truly ;-) lol

We had sudden blustery strong wind here during last night, with small branches loaded with lemon's breaking from my Meyer Lemon - they're justripe - I've pruned the broken pieces and picked more than a dozen lemon's from the prunings - will make lemon honey later today. I'm also going to make a pure lemon marmalade this year - I don't know why I haven't thought to try making this before. The tree had just a few lemon's last year, and is loaded this year - it's first good crop - I'm very pleased. I love lemon's. Though it was just a short time pruning the tree, it was so nice to be outside in the garden for that short while. Have a lovely weekend Everyone. :-)

Hi Everyone. hope you all have garden books and seed catalogues to browse through this weekend. the forecast is for the weather to be stormy. after having a breezy day, it's gone very quiet outside here. the calm before the storm maybe! Take care all. and keep safe.

Inside warm and cosy. Alone with my first 2 copies of NZ Gardener and Homegrown You all have a safe weekend

Well, we found a dry spot this morning(still an icy wind though) and put in the last two posts of our verandah! Now they can settle over the next few likely-to-be-horrible days and I won't keep looking out wishing we could get to them. I hope everyone is stocked up(bet the supermarkets are doing a roaring trade!) and with plenty of inside entertainment planned.

The problem is, I read through the list of contents, and want to read several things at once! hehehe. Good for you Steve. sitting inside in the knowledge of having got a job done before the rain. a fulfilling feeling! Hi Drew. I bought strawberry spinach seeds too. will grow them this summer. sounds interesting doesn't it. NZ House and Garden show is starting on TV1 if any of you want to check it out.

Hi Drewboy. it sure does sound interesting doesn't it. I hope your garden is ok with the weather we're having. hasn't been as bad as was expected here in Whakatane so far. the next part still to come. I've just watched the last programme in this series of Kiwi Maara - and just love the programme - hopefully it's not too long before they start the next series. This is the link to their site: http://www.whiteglovestv.co.nz/ and to the Links page there http://www.whiteglovestv.co.nz/ - there are links there to sites through which people can arrange soil tests, plus access "Seed Savers" organic growing info, biodynamics, permaculture, transition towns, etc.etc. This is the link to Permaculture NZ through the site: http://www.permaculture.org.nz/ and there is a lot of other info available. I'm finding the site really interesting, with a lot of info linked from there. maybe this is of help to others also.

Does anyone know of an easy-peel mandarin that's early season - ripe April / May or earlier! Thanks for help.

*Sweating bullets here* I just finished pruning my huge grapefruit tree, it's damn hard work and it doesn't get any easier every year.I forgot to mention I didn't use a chain saw, don't own one.Just so glad I didn't have more trees to prune today, I'll leave that for another time.Sooo knackered.

buzzh4, Jul 27, 11:37pm
bump to encourage some new gardeners on to the site.
hope everyones gardens survived the storm so far.

flossy21, Jul 28, 1:58am
Well I think I have failed at the winter self sufficiency challenge as my caulis, leeks and Brussels sprouts are not growing very well. They seem to have put on a bit of growth of late and are certainly not dead so maybe I need to put them in earlier next year.

hannah-lee, Jul 29, 4:02pm
Drewboy You were in the due June 06 thread weren't you!

stevee6, Jul 29, 5:11pm
Flossy - hang in there, gardening is always a big learning curve. Start at the beginning - what sort of soil did you plant your veges in! Did you add compost or manure of some sort! And does it have shade or sun! Is it boggy! And, did you add fertiliser when you planted your plants, or since then! All these things will help you to understand what nurtures your plants. Keep asking questions here and on the Get Growing site - everyone will help you to get the most and best out of your garden.

drewboy, Jul 29, 5:15pm
Hannah-lee Yip that was me.WE had a boy on 21 June. You have a good memory.

flossy21, Jul 29, 9:04pm
Yes I add 4 bags of mushroom compost about twice a year to the boxes, plus home compost (worm and other) plus added an organic soil product with lime in it. I had the soil tested as we have clay and we have been adding all the organic minerals plus lime that was recommended but I can no longer get the organic minerals so just do the lime and soil conditioner. We are situated a long way above sea level so it is a lot colder up here than on the flat. I am thinking it is just too cold and that I need to get my plants in earlier next year. They are healthy looking just not really growing and the ones in the glass house are not much better.

drewboy, Jul 29, 11:49pm
Julie LOVE that thread.but it has a down side!.I have been reading it all day and copying and pasting all the great recipes.
