I'm rather stoked - my young apple tree has a dozen apples on it. Only two years old! I've taken off all except four which are swelling nicely. And also I've been a good girl and after all our rain I finally mulched the vege bed with peastraw(we're on sand) so perhaps the soil might hold the water for longer than an hour. The tomato plants are flourishing though - I guess they love the good drainage even though each has its own heap of compost.

phew thats the lawn done No apricots for us this year. They have not ripened and are dropping on the ground. The nectarines are still going well. As are the apples, plums and pears. I nearly forgot the grapes are doing so much better. I felt really pleased when I looked at the veggie garden this morning. Finally have the cabbages, broccoli, silverbeat and the peas (almost planted).I just have to plant the Feijoa and passionate fruit this afternoon. I have a raspberry cane but I am not sure where I am going to plant it. Can you plant Onions in pots! I am running out of room and want to plant some more onions and potatoes.

We still have rain, quite heavy at times with showers in between. Thunder and lightening on and off from 3am too.

Braved the rain yesterday evening to dig some spuds for dinner.even after the (what I thought had been a good amount of) rain the soil was only wet to 10cm, any deeper was still bone dry :( I as amazed!

I cooked a roast chicken (not one of our girls) for dinner and we had spuds, salad greens, eggs, silverbeet and rhubarb all from our place, was so yummy and the friends we had over for dinner thought so too, not a spud left in sight :)

jules., Dec 18, 4:51pm
me again, forgot to mention one of the spuds I dug up last night was a wopping 14x8cm, I was so impressed! Makes all the time and effort worth while :)))))))))))

Your veges and harvestings sound delicious. . I'm hoping to have time in a few days to plant more crops. house building is taking my time - and once we've moved in, the vege garden will be a priority. a few days. and counting.

jules., Dec 21, 12:44am
woohoo! i rumaged around the spuds yesterday and got 30 nice sized wee (gourmet, hehe) ones for christmas day! i will leave the rest till the plants die down so they are bigger. Yum, cant wait :)

juliewn, Dec 21, 5:02am
Hi Jules. a definite cause for celebration!. I'm being strong and waiting till Christmas morning to dig some of my first planted potatoes. which will have pride of place for our Christmas dinner here. I didn't say I'm not being tempted though! lol.

And. Yay for Lynda. :-) and her new gardening programme - "The Road to Ellerslie" - TV1 9.30am Saturday mornings for 13 episodes. the first show is December 27. and the programme will lead up to the inaugural Christchurch Ellerslie Flower Show, starting March 11. Also featuring on the TV show are a different garden each week from Canterbury, plus Tony Murrell (from Mucking in) - who will give advice on sustainability. TV Guide includes that Lynda is presenting a "How to" segment also. I'll be watching - and taping - the new show. Thanks Lynda. and. Yay - a garden show is back on TV. :-)

Misskittydragon - I've got onions in pots. I ran out of space when I bought a couple of the newspaper packets of red onion seedling so being of the waste-not breed I plopped them in a couple of pots where they're thriving in spite of almost complete neglect(guess I'm not as 'waste-not' as I like to think.).

misskittydragon, Dec 21, 9:42pm
stevee6 Thanks for that. So pots it is. No more planting here at the moment. The house garden (thankfully nothing is in it) has gone under water. All I need is the ducks lol. The nursery is holding till Tuesday a couple of Apple cucumbers for me to pick up. They are so hard to get to here. Going in to pick up some more veges and other bits and pieces for the garden on Tuesday. My son and I are finding this really addictive and fun. I have lettuces and celery for Christmas day.

Hiya Jules :-)

Yes, it's very good to be harvesting veges from the new gardens I've built here, even though it was only a few weeks ago that I finished the construction and planted the veges. and we'll use some of the veges on Christmas Day.

How is your garden!

Cheers.

Julie

Looking forward to harvesting. I have found some potatoes here that I forgot about. So I am going to put them in the ground to see if they grow.

hi all, hope you have had a great christmas!
we had lovely new potatos and garden salad on christmas day, was sooooooooo good!
the corn is coming along great guns, i harvested the first 2 of many courgettes the other day, the cucs and gherkins are doing well.
the plum tree is laden and they are starting to get red, only a few more weeks to wait for them, then all the 'work' starts.jam, bottling and just EATING! mmmmmmmm

misskittydragon, Dec 27, 10:36pm
I have muscles I didnt know exsisted lol I have spent the whole day outside in the garden and doing the lawns. Planted lettuce, pumpkin, peas, broccoli, radicchio, cabbage, brussel sprouts and beetroot. Also dragged some tires out and planted the nasturtiums and marigolds. Had two trips to the nursery as I forgot the broccoli when I was there the first time. It was lovely to step back and see what the hard work has brought. Looking at seeing when to plant Anise Hyssop if I can find it. Also was looking at planting some bee balm, cat mint and nicotiana in the next planting session. Have a happy New Year and may it bring all that you could wish for and bumper harvests.

Hi Everyone.
Hope you all had a lovely Christmas. and that your gardens are growing well - hot here - 27°C today. gardening is done in the evening!

stevee6, Dec 28, 12:36am
Great foody holidays here - and we'll harvest all our new potatoes for New Year. Berries still doing well, carrots, peas, silverbeet, artichokes getting harvested and the first of the courgettes are in sight!

stevee6, Dec 28, 2:18pm
Misskittydragon - the soreness is worth it when you're harvesting, and by the sounds of it, you'll be able to feed the millions :-) We're demolishing an old shed this weekend so once the site is cleared I'll have space for a really good sized vege plot - can't wait!

jules., Dec 29, 2:33am
went out this evening to sprinkle some derist dust (organic) and ended up weeding 1/2 the garden while i was at it too. was ok though, i ate a few yellow beans while on my way round and sampled the first purple bean aswell, its all worth it in the end!

whiskey13, Dec 29, 3:38am
Was given a $40 Warehouse voucher for christmas and want to buy something edible for the garden. The in-laws gave it to me and this year they've given me a mandarin tree, a grapevine, 3 Raspberry canes, and a pepino plant.(They know i wanna be self sufficient.)I want something that will be long term but am finding it really hard to think of something. I also already have:rhubarb, strawberries, blueberries, cranberries, lemon tree, asparagus, jerusalem artichokes. All suggestions will be taken onboard. TIA.

jules., Dec 30, 2:48am
Did everyone survive the silly season!
Hope you all had a fab Christmas and got lots of gardening goodies :)

Have a happy and safe New Year!
