Hi Hannah. we've had some rain here too while not home for a few days - amazing growth here during that time. very good to see.

jules., Mar 5, 3:13pm
the rain has stopped, so im off to dig over my garden nd plant more seeds and spuds. im annoyed though, i got a fig tree and was told it was the red variety, they are now ripe and the kids have had some and they are WHITE, not very impressed as i feel they dont have as much flavour. but the kids like them. its nice to have the rain over with for now, my poor chooks can dry out again, they look so FUNNY when its raining, they put their tails down and stand tall so the water doesnt get in, very cute.

List what you're looking for here as many of us have got spare seeds from this season that would still be viable. I'd be happy to put up a quick $1 auction for as many spare seeds of varieties you're looking for.

Toilet paper - very light so the shoots break through without too much trouble.

Thanks Stevee.are you or anyone else able to tell me when a pepino is ripe and ready for eating. This is the first time growing one and we are all really looking forwarding to eating one having never tried one before.

temco1 just heard on 'good morning' if you pumpkin leaves have mildue spray with a mix of 1/2 milk and 1/2 water! I dont think I would do it on a hot day, might get a bit smelly - lol

Hi everyone. I'm noticing that growth is slowing in my garden as the evenings and nights are cooling. am hoping there's enough warmth and sun still to ripen my watermelon's! How are all of your garden's growing! Hope you're harvesting lots of goodies.

stevee6, Mar 11, 9:37pm
Pulled out the first of my tomato plants that have finished. The courgettes have slowed right up too - not much longer to go I suspect. Oh well - constructing a new series of raised gardens so will start the winter crops once the white butterflies slow down a bit too.

jules., Mar 12, 3:10am
anyones seeds thru yet after all the rain we have been having! im still waiting for mine, but hasnt been long so not really expecting them yet. ive planted cabbage, caulis and parsnips so far, just waiting for the beans to come to an end so i can make room for seeds.

Another bump for new enthusiasts.

musikcrazee, Mar 13, 8:10pm
white butterflys there are a few around here what winter veges do they like to munch!

stevee6, Mar 13, 9:27pm
Brassicas. Cabbage, broccoli etc. Try netting 'em when you plant -the plants, not the butterflies :-)

kiwiscrapper1, Mar 13, 11:02pm
my tomatoes are still going well, huge growth spurt this week and still loads of 'GREEN" tomatoes, still slowly ripening but I pick as soon as they start to turn pink or the pukekos pull them off. Pulled up my carrots today and have lots really nice size, also spring onions have done well and the last of the beans for dinner too. What do I plant now, can I sow more carrots! parsnips! I have just planted leeks in the last two weeks and need to get some broccoli in. Did all my house work today so hopefully fine tomorrow so I can get in the garden. Have a great gardening weekend everyone.

Hi Kiwi. this is from yesterday's Get Growing email: "Keep sowing and planting winter vege crops including beetroot, broccoli, carrots, Chinese cabbages like bok choy and pak choy, cauliflower, spinach and perpetual silverbeet. In cooler areas, it's better to opt for planting punnets of seedlings, rather than sowing direct, as night temperatures start dipping quickly and slow germination rates." Hope this helps. have a lovely day in your garden. way better doing that than housework!

Tomatoes have been very late here - I've picked the last of the Black Krim but my Green Zebra and Aunt Ruby's are still unripe(yes I checked just in case lol). Courgettes are full of mildew so they're going to get the old heave ho, but on the good side, the new pea plants are roaring away so we should have some tender young pods pretty soon. Harvested a ton of tarragon and basil for oils and vinegar - one of my random basil plants is most ornamental with dark purple flowers and leaves untouched by creepy crawlies. Will definitely keep seed from that!

juliewn, Mar 16, 3:35am
Hi Kiwi. I don't have much luck growing carrots. and you've inspired me to try again. did you add anything to the soil before sowing the seeds! I've heard that adding sand to the soil can make it a finer texture to help them grow too. any suggestions would be appreciated please. thanks. Julie

stevee6, Mar 17, 1:43am
Juliewn - I garden on sandy soil and despite much neglect we had baby carrots all summer long, so maybe that's the secret. How about trying seed in a bucket of mixed sand/soil!
