Plated bolts in treated timber

The zinc plated bolts in my gate have rusted to bits. The timber was treated with LOSP, but I imagine that tanalised timber would also attack the bolts.
I'd like to use stainless bolts but Mitre10 & Bunnings have nothing smaller than M12, and I want M6.
Placemakers don't seem to have any on their website.
I imagine that Steelmasters are closed in the weekend.

Zinc plated, is not the same as galvanised, as you have now found out.

If you want a range of stainless sizes, I guess you need a professional supplier. Then you'll need to decide if you want 308 or 316?

trade4us2, Jun 16, 2:29pm
Well it's only a gate. But I need only four, so 316 at $1.70 each will be fine.

Or 314 Stainless

Why do cup head bolts cost 5 times as much as hex head bolts?

And why are 80mm bolts cheaper than 50mm bolts?

ebygum1, Jun 16, 4:45pm
It's all to do with manufacturing volumes, the greater the demand for a particular size, the bigger the production run, the lower the cost.

sooby, Jun 16, 11:59pm
Try greasing the bolts, should make them last longer by slowing the wood acids from attacking the steel

trade4us2, Jun 17, 8:43am
Why can't I use brass bolts?

clangie, Jun 17, 9:07am
they sell some at mitre10 designed for your use, have a pale greenish coating on them, similar price to galv

harm_less, Jun 17, 9:55am
Use galvanised. We've recently stripped down old sheep yard gates which are the best part of 15 years old and many of the galv fitting were good enough to reuse. And as sooby said, put some grease on the bolts (and especially threads) during assembly to give them additional protection.

pauldw, Jun 17, 11:26am
Galvanising is still zinc. It is the copper in LOSP timber treatment that causes the zinc to corrode. Once the zinc is gone the steel rusts. Tanalising does it too but not as quickly. I've undone some bolts in a 30 year old deck that were down to half thickness. It was quicker to undo the rest by tightening untill they snapped.

I'm going to use brass bolts. I made some brass nuts.

trade4us2, Jun 17, 5:59pm
Making things out of metal is my day job!

Brass hinges too?

trade4us2, Jun 17, 10:01pm
I already have stainless steel hinges, and I will use stainless screws.
The old plated screws were rusted into the Kauri. I had to jemmy the hinges off.

trade4us2, Jun 17, 10:06pm
They seem to be about half the Steelmasters price .

cleggyboy, Jun 18, 10:29am
These are the guys for ST/ST fittings and it is 316 grade.

You got the required gear wheels to cut 41tpi? And no, it's not a metric one!

trade4us2, Jun 18, 12:14pm
Quarter inch BSW is 20 tpi. We are an Imperial workshop, and have dies.

tegretol, Jun 18, 2:42pm
So do I have an extensive range of dies.

But I need a 6" length of threaded rod 13/32" in diam threaded at 41 tpi. There ain't no dienut that will do that and my lathe doesn't have the gearing to do that. Can you assist?

trade4us2, Jun 18, 7:32pm
I'll check the lathe tomorrow. It sounds unlikely.

easygoer, Jun 20, 10:33am
You can always try a marine shop like Burnsco, they stock stainless bolts and screws

trade4us2, the brass bolts are beautiful!

Just a note for the future though - brass is usually copper, zinc, and some lead. Corroded brass can look a LOT like copper, as the corrosion mechanism means the zinc part is removed. - If your brass bolts on your gate start to look copper coloured, they may have lost a lot of their strength.
