Window sash size

flopsie, Feb 27, 8:53pm
In a quote for a house build the quoter has put in a note to say a window sash size exceeds Fairview's recommendations. Does this just mean it's too bloody big? It's 3800 long x 1850 high.

Just means their product is designed for a certain size, however,if there is a decent header over the head of the window & the sides have been beefed up should be no problem as the window just “floats” inside the space & takes no load.I installed a Fairview ranchslider into an old window space (deepened of course) as well as widened, the frame appeared to be a normal size for what it was designed for & I beefed up the header (240x100) spanning over 4 mtrs & 3x100x50either side of the reveal, was over code that the owner provided.

Thanx, I will draw this matter to the attn. of my draughtsman. I just hope the building consenters at the council are on the case.

Dont do it.
Talk to the manufacturer re max size.
Because you might not be happy down the track in the wind lmao

yeah well draughtsman has a bit of work to do on plans before going for consent. I asked him to just do enough so builders could quote on it. Not to late to make minor changes

It doesn't sound overly big to me. But check with fairview (if that's the brand of joinery you are having) and see what they say. Is it just 1 big piece of glass or several separate units in one big frame?

3800x1850 d/g unit would be very heavy .

flopsie, Mar 1, 11:12pm
Two smallish opening windows, one at each end but big pane in middle is 2700 mm long

supernova2, Mar 1, 11:35pm
Mmm 2700 x 1850 will be a heavy monster in DG but is it the size or the weight that's the possible problem? the 2 opening 500s wont be an issue.

I don't know if its the sheer size of the whole thing or the one big pane in the middle. Getting back my first post. what does sash actually mean ? If I could determine that then I'd know why Fairview don't recommend it. Perhaps if they made the opening parts of the window bigger and the centre piece smaller.

clangie, Mar 2, 8:23pm
the opening parts are the sashes, the big piece in the middle is a fixed pane, most likely means that the middle piece cannot be made to open (sash) so will be fixed, incase you were planning for the middle to open, a piece of double glazed glass that size is over 100kg

Right thanks, so the two opening windows are bigger than what Fairview prefer. I find this a little surprising as they are only 550 wide x 1850 high. Probably the height they don't like eh

pollywoppy, Mar 4, 9:49pm
The maximum for a sash is 1800, 1850 is obviously over the recommendation so you may find they'll make it if you insist but you won't have the warranty on that item. Have you thought about where the window catches will be and how you'll operate it? If you can only open/close one catch at a time if you can't reach both, the sash will start to twist and you'll have nothing but problems with them. Stick with joinery recommendations, they are there for a reason and the reasons are so that they function correctly

Yep we will do that, 1600 would do
