And if so, what with? I know that macro only lasts about 10 years before starting to rot, so I have been thinking maybe some sort of plastic liner might help delay issues?
Or is that just too fussy ?

don,t do it. plastic will stop draining properly, aerating properly and the worms getting in.
Our unlined boxes, just plain untreated pine lasted almost 20 years.

I always line sides with h/d black polythene, but leave the bottoms open (for drainage and worms), and have used various timbers including macrocarpa.
Seems the best option, especially for raised gardens along a fenceline, you certainly don't want a shared fence to rot out, do you? Along the fencline side, I've carried the poly out another 75-100 mm, just to be on the safer side.
