Hi I am looking to buy some roses to be planted in individual tubs along the edge of my raised deck. I don't want to go higher than 1.5m and the planter they will go in is about 40cm already. The individual tubs will go inside the planter which is a long box. The planter is about 2m long and wide enough for the shrubs to go single file. I'd like frangrant, easy care and white/cream colour. I'd like to pick from the bushes too. Am I starting to ask too much!! Anyway, I need advice on where to buy the roses (I am in Christchurch but can mail order), and which type or variety to buy! I am a rose novice and won't have a lot of time for major maintenance! Thanks

As you are looking at a small area, I'd go for white carpet roses as they're hardy, scented, easy care and you can get them in small standards if you want to underplant. You can pick them, but they're not large flowers like modern hybrid tea roses. If you look around you can find NZ online companies that deal in them, but this one gives you an idea what the plants look like.
I personally think you are doing it hard! Roses are relatively high maintenance, especially in pots. But, it seems you have progressed so far that it is going to be difficult to change things now. Why I say they (roses) are not so easy in pots as in the ground is that they do prefer a cooler root run. Having said that, they will be protected by the pot AND the container they sit in. Secondly - they are gross feeders so will need regular and good amounts of food to continue to perform and look good. Thirdly, they like long. deep waterings - once a week full dunking for half an hour or so will be infinitely preferable to a quick dribble with a hose. You will need to regularly deadhead them (and a formative prune from time to time) throughout the growing season to keep the flowering going. And, depending upon how much care and attention you give them, some form of pest and disease control. My first thought was white flower carpet - they are pretty indestructible but they don't really have a lot of fragrance. Margaret Merrill would probably be my pick - not overly strong on fragrance but a very nice all round good doer. There's also white Iceberg - will give masses of flowers but again - little fragrance. You should be able to order these from any garden centre or you can go to South Pacific Roses in CHC or maybe online from Tasman Bay Roses in Motueka. If you decide to go with roses, my best suggestion would be to order them NOW. You won't get them till probably June at the earliest - and if you order on line they will be barerooted so you will need to have all your soil and pots ready for planting. You can't hang around with bareroots. Garden centres and SP Roses will have potted them (but only freshly potted in small bags.) but these will not be sufficient to sustain them for a whole year. The other thing you will have to do in a restricted growing space such as a pot, is root prune them and refresh the growing medium every winter. There's lots to think about!

wow. I did maybe bite off more than I can chew! Thanks for your advice. I am going to try the Margaret Merrill and will call South Pacific Roses right away. I am going to plant them in large containers that I can lift out and soak in a bigger container filled with water, so that should meet those requirements. I can add feed at the same time. I am going to need advice down the track on root pruning - so that's an annual winter activity! For a 2m length how many will I need if they are to be close together but not crowded and even spaced!

I do wish you luck wilco. I had roses in pots and they were hard work, especially keeping them well watered. I had two in half wine barrels, they were standard Austin Roses. From memory after the first summer, I realised that my romantic view, didnt match the reality, so that Autumn I dug them up and planted them in the garden.

What you have described to us sonuds like a Peace Rose to me, and that variety does symbolize peace. Over the years, florists have changed the s of rose colors. Yellow used to mean jealousy, but now it can mean joy.Other than traditional for love and black roses to symbolize over the hill or some other such negative thing, I don't think most people who receive roses care what color they are. Most people are not going to spend a huge amount of money on roses to hurt someone.Roses in general are one fo the traditional flowers that represent St. Mary.
