Foam backed carpet glued to rimu floor!

I want to finish the floors back to wood, lovely rimu floor boards, but someone previously put down foam backed carpet, without underlay, and just glued it down to the boards around the edge of the room. Whats the best way of removing the glue and foam that has torn from the old carpet from off the boards without staining the wood! I thought sanding at first but Im guessing the grit will just clog up on the foam. Help please!

could try turps or thinners to disolve glue

Yes, well, money is quite a big issue so I was planning to do it myself. I have a belt sander with various grade grit to get the boards down nice. I think someone may have planned to finish the floor and just never got to it, hence the manky carpet thats down. All the nails have been punched and the glue is only around the edge of the room, thankfully, and they feel like they have had a pervious sanding, just not down fine enough to varnish. Its a small bedroom at the cold end of the house and the carpet has had a hammering and smells damp and mouldy which is why I want it gone. We've taken care of the damp problem so no issues with that going forward, just want this ick carpet gone and floor looking good.

The easy way that wont damage the wood is to sponge or lightly spray on 'De-Solve-It' (from hardware shop), leave it to soak in for 10 mins, then it scrapes right off with a fish slice or paint scraper :)Been there, done it.

Petrol dissolves a lot of glues, combined with a linbide, and heaps of ventilation
