you can end up with a lot of tubor and not many flowers if you don't devide. once every 2yrs is what we work to.

when is the best time and how do you store them etc! Most of them have been in the ground for around 5-6 years.

I've just done the same (yesterday).Over the years the plants have gotten so big that they have taken over the garden. One of them I particularly like so I'm going to plant two of the smaller tubers.I believe that if they are lifted each year, the plants don't get so big.I just cut all mine back leaving about 10 inches of stalk then pulled out the tubers and have them stored in a sack hanging in the garage.Recommended storage though is to lay them in trays and cover in sand. The hessian sack will do me though.

thanks for that, they are dying off now so I guess anytime soon will be good.

I always wait until the first frosts blacken them, then I put them in trays and cover with dry potting mix, merely because it's easy to obtain and I just tip it in the hole when planting out the dahlias. It gets super wet here in the winter so I have to lift all my dahlias, bit of a pain as I have heaps and they take up loads of room in the carport (doesn't go down well with the other half, he'll have to build my "promised 5 years ago "new potting shed soon).

I have a dahlia question .this year the growth seemed really stunted on most of mine, only one reaching stakeable hight. The rest only got to about 15-20 cm and the foliage seems weird as well. Was it the lack of summer!

I'd guess so, mine were ok this year (and boy, did we have some rain! Not much sun though). Normally they get to 1m/1.3m ish, this year only 80cms or so, think the flowering was a bit poor compared to some years too. I think the food I was giving them probably was leached out a bit too. Not complaining about the rain, I only had to water the garden 3 times this summer, not 3 times a week like usual.
