Staining rough sawn timber.

malone4, Jan 14, 6:36pm
I was wondering if anybody has had experience applying oil based stain by spray gun on rough sawn timber!
The instructions on the can dont say any thing about applying with a spray gun But I was wondering if I could get away with it.
Im thinking I'd have to apply more than a few coats doing it this way but I would get an even finish.

What are your thoughts! Any success stories!
I am aware the clean up of the gun would be messy though.

I did our fence with an airless spray. Wouldn't do it any other way - literally 10x faster than a brush and more even
Costa few years ago $135/day to hire a pro airless machine. Those Wagner airless spray guns are totally useless.

thanks for that. And you used oil based stain via spray gun on your fence!
My plan is to use air compressor for the job.

And yes I have to agree about the wagner ,though they do paint well but dont last long.
you get what you pay for.

used aircompressor to stain my rough sawn fence, i only had one of those budget spray guns that are usually free with a cheap compressor.as soon as i worked out the water to stain ratio it was sweet, staining rough sawn timber any other way sucks, i imagine if you thin your oil based stain with whatever the can says to thin it with it will be fine, run some turps through the gun after wards to clean it.

I got a $40 HVLP sprayer from Bunnings, bit of a pain because you have to pour the stain into the cups, but boy was it quick.Thin the stain down a bit first (I assume you're using water-based).Yes, would never do it any other way.I now use the Wagner Wall Perfect sprayer, which is superb. The airless ones are junk.

Oh, sorry, you said oil-based.Yes you can, but you need to put a fair bit of turps into the stain, and you would be better off using a cheap one and budgeting on throwing it afterwards just in case.

Hey thanks guys.
I wasnt too sure as I hadnt done it before. The directions dont say anything about spraying it on ,only brush or applicator. And yes it will be a heck of a job on rough sawn.
I will thin it out a bit and practice on some cut off's and see how it goes.
My main concern was if it sinks into the timber or not as with an applicator they are designed to do just that.
But the trick is not to apply it too generously with the first couple of coats with the applicator otherwise it will just run off and not sink in and my thought would be that the gun 'may' do just that but wasnt sure so was after any success stories.

lol.I guess If it doesnt work I will be writing it up in the 'lessons learned the hard way' thread later.

will report back once I give it a shot. (and for fine weather).

use a garden sprayer oil stain is about as thin as water no need to thin it

malone4, Jan 19, 5:21am
have you done it before!

roys351, Jan 19, 7:23pm
yes i am a painter and have been for close to 30 years if it was a big job i would use my airless but not on a small job as to clean the machine out would cost more in turps than the price of a garden sprayer from the warehouse.you need about 7L of turps to clean out a airless and gun a 30m airless line holds at least 1.5L of fluid

def use oil based water based does not repel water and you would be painting water on something that you want to be waterproof.a bit like painting rust with water the sales people at the paint shop will recomend water stain .dont take my word for it ask a painter

cheers roy good advise.
and yes ,oil base is definitely better for weather proofing.haha.
I already have the stain and it is a big job im committing myself to.
board and baton my house. My plan is to use an air compressor with spray gun so its just the gun thats to be cleaned. the spray head is a goodie but the storage bottle is plastic throw away.
So if it can be done this way then you have answered my question.Thank you.
Because all i was wondering was if it can be done by spray gun as it says nothing about it in the directions. only speaks of brush or applicator.

Interesting about the garden spray pack though. But not for a big job.

My ESP let me down. My fingers are blistered and splintered from a weekend of brushing paint on a rough sawn fence. Wish I'd read this last week-there's an old garden sprayer in the garage I could use.
