What's wrong with knocking on the door and just letting them know you are taking a cutting. My neighbours took a massive new branch off my lovely rose along our shared driveway and threw it over the fence. They just snapped it off for me. Would have been nice if they had simply asked me to do it and I could have saved some of it.

Thanks guys, will give it a go. Where do I get pruning paste! Just a garden centre or any way of making my own!
