Want to make it up myself.a bit dear to buy from shops. I know you want good drainage,but what do I use to make for myself.Thanks.

I do all mine in coco coir (75%) + perlite (25%), or a google hydroponic raft system and follow the same principles.

Most Garden centers have Propagating mix.Any good quality potting mix should do. Best done latesummer and Autumn I understand. ,

I thought that with better drainage the cuttings might come on better than ordinary soil.

I use propagating sand, pumice, sphagnum, potting mix or perlite depending on the plants in question.

I use quite a gritty sand (kind you use when laying pavers or bricks) mixed with potting mix.

I put them in rooting hormone then just straight into a pot with home compost.

As templeton1 said gritty sand works well. I use it all the time.

Yes for some reason cuttings and seedlings too for that matter do seem to like the gritty stuff, I have masses of carex golden curls self seeding into the gravel, oh and panseys just love it.
