Want to make it up myself.a bit dear to buy from shops.
I know you want good drainage, but what do I use to make
for myself.Thanks.

I do all mine in coco coir (75%) + perlite (25%), or a google hydroponic raft system and follow the same principles.

Most Garden centers have
Propagating mix.Any good quality potting mix should do.

I thought that with better drainage the cuttings might come on better than
ordinary soil.

I use propagating sand, pumice, sphagnum, potting mix or perlite depending on the plants in question.

I use quite a gritty sand (kind you use when laying pavers or bricks) mixed with potting mix.

I put them in rooting hormone then just straight into a pot with home compost.

As templeton1 said gritty sand works well. I use it all the time.

Yes for some reason cuttings and seedlings too for that matter do seem to like the gritty stuff, I have masses of carex golden curls self seeding into the gravel, oh and panseys just love it.

Thanks to all and will try what templeton1 suggests.
