Hello, I have two areas which need some attention. Firstly a retaining bank that needs planting to stop erosion and also keep the weeds at bay. I would love something visually appealing year round and am happy to plant a selection. The site has all day sun and is north/ east facing. It is about 6-7m long by 2m. Any suggestions? Also I have a retaining 'wall' made out of tyres that also needs planting out - there are about 22 planting pockets about 1/3-1/2 the diameter of each tyre. It has sun late morning/ mid day onwards. I also love photos if anyone has any of their retaining banks to share. Thanks in advance.

Sorry, don't know the name of them, but there are pretty lavender sort of daisies that are low growing and kind of look like a succulent if that makes sense? I've seen them growing on retaining type walls and banks. stunning in a group. Someone on here will know what they're called.

Alyssum could be worth considering.

for the tyres I would go for a hanging rosemary. Easily chopped back, evergreen, pretty, useful. You could miss a few pockets and save those for perennials or annuals if you want a bit of colour.
For the bank you want something with a dense root system to hold it together. Agapanthus have always been good for this, if you want a shrub, griselinea littoralis but keep pruned so it doesn’t get too big. Another good plant for banks/ground cover is grevillea bronze rambler.
Just a couple of suggestions from me anyway.

for the bank you could plant the griselinea at the back, the agapanthus in front of that and the bronze rambler cascading down the front (could plant the hanging rosemary alternating with the grevillea? )

If you decide on agapanthus consider using the miniature one with pale blue flowers.

not nearly as effective as the large ones.
White is very pretty.

For the best ‘look’ you want to have different textures and colours. The plants I have suggested will provide this. But IMO the white agapanthus would look ‘classier’ lol

Before you plant on the bank, if it is a high bank I recommend that you put some wire mesh over it and attach the mesh well at the top to big pegs. That saves digging out all the plants and soil when the whole lot slides down.

Grevillia Royal Mantle if you can get it. Groundcover, two plants will cover the area. They are drought tolerant (we had two in Tasmania and were never watered), evergreen and red flowers for birds.

There is a bank of them in our town along the highway and they look stunning. The greenery thickens up and becomes a bank of green.

Thanks. I already have a well established bank in agapanthus which are due for lifting and dividing this Autumn so will definitely incorporate a plant or two in this planting, as they definitely have a place. Loving the look of Grevillia Royal Mantle especially and Griselinea and rosemary together for some texture. Always exciting planning a garden and enjoying it once established- doing the work not so much!

Have a look at any of the ground cover Grevillea's, bronze rambler etc. You could also plant different coloured Arctotis in the lower pockets, they need no care and are easy to prune when necessary.

Loropetalum, available in pinkish bronze with pink flowers or in light green with white flowers, both look lovely
