Amarylllis seedlings

flier3, May 19, 11:21am
Right, so in February of this year, I sowed some amaryllis seeds in potting mix with perlite. They have mostly struck well and are approx 6" high now, in their punnets. Can anyone tell me when to prick them out into their first pots? Should I let them grow on slowly through winter and transplant in spring? Many thanks for any help - my first attempt at trying to grow these myself.

Oh, thanks so much bobcat. Your new one is stunning!
I have just counted them all and have 73 seeds that struck!

I would wait till the spring. I grew about 15 seedlings about three years ago and am still waiting for flowers.

Many thanks, meetee. I started these looking as being very long-term - haha, probably as an investment for my kids!

I just planted about 20 bulbs along the inside of my picket fence. They might look amazing when they flower, or maybe the fence will cut out much of the light.

20 bulbs! I'm mightily impressed. One day .

There were dozens of them growing at the top corner of my property where nobody can see them.

could be from the same family like belladonna lily

I've grown Haemanthus Amaryllis seeds from seed pods and finished up with about 300 or more - 3 different varieties. https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/786487701.jpg This is how I grew them, with a lid on. Floated in water. I've heard they take 3 or 4 years to flower. Heavens knows what I'm going to do with all of them. One of them is the same colours as this one https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/795074976.jpg A friend bought it for me at Christmas

Wow - great strike rate there, ynotbrich! I'm impressed! I thought they took much longer than three years before they are big enough to flower, so things are looking up for mine. Now having thoughts of having them out in my gardens. Great to have something to plan for and look forward to!

I've had to cover the trays with bird netting as they were pulling them out looking for bugs. There's a guy on you tube they call the Amaryllis man. He floats them like me and then plants them around a larger pot supporting the leaf. I'll post a photo of two colours I did the other is a red. https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/797099299.jpg

I scrounged some 6 planter pots also 24's off my friend and put them in those until they get a bit bigger. This was all an experiment for me, then I thought about how long they would take to flower ! I still have quite a few to do

Oh, same here with Charisma! Have also got Lemon Ice and Red Velvet well on the way in the tubs. Others I started off in water, are a bit mixed up, cos the pen marking has worn off and I haven't a clue which is which now - the above two and Papillio so it will be interesting to see which is which! Fortunately, the rest are well marked.

It's quite exciting, I'll be giving some away I think. They do make a lovely display when they flower. I think some of mine got mixed up to, it's quite hard to keep marked as it fades. I use a pencil now on the stick

gosh you are all lucky to strike the seeds the ones i got nothing showing just yet
