Have a friend who paints lot of cane furniture with spray cans of paint.

It never lasts for long as cane slightly bends under pressure, cracks and flakes, even with clear coat.

Use a primer, then spray paint several light coats, letting it dry between each one.

An acrylic is your best bet - it retains slight flexibility better than paints that cure hard.
And a good prep scrub with salt water or sugar soap and rinse helps.

Spray paint every time! Get the hubby's air compressor, invest in a paint gun for about $100 from Placemakers & get into it! It's very addictive! And much easier to use water based enamel paint for quick drying & ease of cleaning!
