From kauri scotch chest. Has been in non-smokers possession for 35 years and I have inherited it. I can still smell it. The great aunt that had it, smoked like a chimney and never opened a window. Everything in her home was yellow even the fridge. Mum had scented draw liners in it and i didnt notice the nicotine in her much larger room. Its in a small room here and The smell is quite overpowering.

Might be worthwhile pouring baking soda over every part of it, taking a few weks, sprinkling each side etc, then sweeping it off before vaccumming it off. Just a suggestion for you. Edited to add - just use dry baking soda.

Along with the baking soda put some white vinegar in a plate and leave inside and beside it overnight. Repeat for a few days. It neutralizes the smell.

Vanilla extract (not essence) in a dish will absorb smells. Yo might have to replace it every few days and as it has been like this for along time, it could take awhile. I have used this and it does work.

Could you paint some sort of sealer/varnish over it to seal the smell in the wood?

It's NOT nicotine. It's the tar in smokes.

How does this answer the question?

You can buy nilodor, it can help remove smells. I personally would ring a furniture restorer and ask their advice. You don’t want to damage the wood.

Phone this NZ company who specialise is cleaning, deodorising, etc. They may have something or could advise. Products look expensive but dilution is huge.
