Before you take a broken panel off a fence, check if there is a retaining wall along the WHOLE wall.
Clean a fireplace before getting it removed. It isn't a waste of $100. Vacuum cleaners cost more.

Just coz its cold outside, its still not a good idea to assemble your new concrete mixer in the lounge.

Never assume that hubby will 'watch out for you' on the job. When installing an aluminium awning window, and you are holding it from the inside (which requires wrapping your hand around the frame with the winddow open) don't think for a minute that hubby wont shut the window to step back and admire his work. My thumb paid the price in the short term, but he will be paying for a long time yet.

And another thing. Despite the concentration required when removing nails from a recently stripped ceiling, be aware that if you are on a step ladder and in your efforts to reach all the nails you have turned around at some point, the chances are 50/50 that when you step backwards to go down the ladder without looking you may be stepping off the side of the ladder. This one hurts!

Here's Snopes on the barrel-of-bricks story. I remember when Gerard Hoffnung recorded his version of it in the 1950s, it was never off radio request sessions. But it's a lot older than that:

Don't let the chooks out back gate into the bush Despite the fantastic scratching in the leaf litter, the neighbours garden is way more attractive.Suprising how much damage four chooks can do in an hour.

Dont after 10 years decide to change the colour of the pergola that was originally green and painted white 10 years ago (4 Coats to cover) back to green(3 Coats to cover).

And if you have never yet been given a live crayfish, you will not yet have had to decide whether to boil it alive, drown it in fresh water or let it go slowly to sleep in the freezer, before you can actually eat it.I decided I didn't like the idea of putting it alive into boiling water, so opted for the easy option of drowning it in fresh water. Now if you plan on doing this, then either have a lid handy, or do it outside.A crayfish can displace a huge amount of water in a very little time I discovered to my cost. The crayfish was at the bottom of a very large bucket and Ifilled a 3 litre jug with water and poured over it.No lid handy.Within seconds the crayfish was just about high and dry which is more than could be said for me and the kitchen!

After spending half an hour trying to remove a tyre from it's rim ( small inflatable tyre like on the furniture remover trolley's) I decided, even thinking it wasnt a good idea, to try a faster way by overinflating the other one hoping it would gently pop the bead off the rim.The resulting explosion! was enough to break a bone, and I can tell you felt like someone ran over my arm with a truck. LOL

okay - when painting the deck of the boat and using expensive "sprinkles" to achieve a non-skid finish, DO NOT try this when it is windy, as the "sprinkles" just blow away before they have a chance to stick to the paint.

Don't worry at-home. Hopefully you will learn from those that have gone before as what not to do.

Slightly OT but when sewing a dress with fabric that is completely reversible, and you find that you have made two left fronts, it is not necessary to unpick and re-sew BOTH fronts. If you do, you find you end up with two right fronts.I know.I did it once.Haven't been stupid enough to do it a second time - but I have made other sewing stuff ups.

fastduck, Jan 19, 4:50am
another OT one when wanting to sneak out to the shops quickly by yourself in the morning whilst hubby and kids are having a lay in, don't get dressed in the dark. I walked around the supermarket, the fruit shop and the petrol station with my dark blue trou on inside out! When I got home I scratched my bum and thought whats that string hanging off the back of my pants and then on further investigation I realised it was the seam! talk about laugh myself silly

kuaka, Jan 19, 2:50pm
fastduck - I didn't even have the excuse of getting dressed in the dark. But I managed to leave the house in a hurry (obviously without looking in the mirror first) and spent a whole day in and out of shops, spent over an hour chosing a new bed, and late afternoon we ended up at the club for a drink before coming home and I went to the loo and realised I had my blouse on inside out.It was already done up so just slipped it over my head or I would have realised when I tried to do the buttons up that they were the wrong way.I felt such a twit.

From observation
when launching your boat at the boat ramp during a low spring tide, never assume the ramp just carries on at the same angle into the murky water,
as when the tralier drops over the underwater cliff made by the suction dredge, it will become stuck andalso can not be removed from the vehicle tow bar, thus the vehicle will also become stuck , and being that low tide has just passed, remember to wind up your windows in the vehicle so the little fish don't get trapped in the vehicleduring the time it takes to extract vehicle and trailer

Don't ask your future mother in law In the middle of a scorching hot day (Who had a ruddy bad back) to climb up a ladder to the top of the water tank and drill a hole to put a bigger pipe in unless you have charged the b----- drill first. Don't stuff around trying to charge the drill fro 15 mins and think it will work and send her up the ladder again. Just connect the powerdrill and get the job done in 2 mins instead of the 40 mins. Then quickly take the power drill from her before she actually does what she is thinking of doing with it!

If you have great visions of all the renovations you will do to your home, and you want the tasks to be totally completed, don't marry a builder! This is NOT a myth! *sigh*
