Have to admit that I have a room with masking tape still in situ several months after painting. Keep telling myself I'm saving the removal job for a rainy day but will have to do it sooner than later. Suspect it will be very dificult.

My late husband, bless his cotton socks, painted the window sills, did not mask them and there is white enamel all over the brown aluminium window frames. How do I get that off!

When cutting glass for a cat flap, first cut the circle, then bisect it with some wavy parallel lines, then add LOTS more lines across these. Finally, GENTLY tap at one portion LOTS and LOTS of times to get it to break. Don't cut the circle, then add 4 - 5 cross hatches and then hit hard with a claw hammer as that doesn't work. Also, a new bit of glass with free lesson on how to cut it, even after closing hours, is $50.

When turning on the hose to wash the car, make sure that the other end of the hose is closed off OR that the car windows are up.

Don't light a chimera while it is sitting on the lawn - it gets too hot and kills a 1/2 metre circle of grass underneath, leaving a hole in the lawn.

When cutting railway sleepers for landscaping check for metal dogs that have been cut off flush with the timber and not removed completely - chainsaws and skil saws do not like these. Also, don't bother with a skill saw at all, unless you don't have a chainsaw.

Keep an eye on the total weight of gravel/hardfill/other crap when wheelbarrowing it out to the trailer for dumping. It all adds up and while you can usually not get nicked for an overloaded trailer, the weighbridge at the landfill will get you and make you pay accordingly.

Fill up your lawnmower with fuel AFTER you have removed, shapenend and replaced the blade - filling the fuel up, then leaving the mover on its side means that the fuel leakes out and onto the grass, killing it.

During daylight savings, keep an eye on the time You may not mind running a router until it gets dark, but dark is 9:00pm - 10:00pm at the moment and the rest of the street does mind. Well, at least the ones not running their own tools late.

Hand winches are great for removing small tree stumps. You just need the stump, the winch and an anchor point. The anchor point needs to hold better than the stump. Verandah support posts do not make great anchors.

Go Pico! More from me.when extracting a stubborn fence post using a strop tied to your brand new work ute, do not accelerate off too quickly as the post will follow you and put a large dent in your brand new tailgate.

hutchk, Jan 4, 9:22pm
And from many, many years ago. Selleys No More Gaps is NOT an effective way to plaster a wall your dog has gouged holes in. The finish leaves a little to be desired. Landlords across NZ rejoiced when I stopped renting.

hutchk, Jan 4, 9:24pm
And from when I was labouring. when pushing a full barrow of concrete up hill, watch out for patches of loose gravel underfoot, which may cause you to slip and fall face first in to the wet cement. This will be extremely funny according to the concrete truck driver and all of your workmates, but removing wet concrete from your nasal passages is not.

And on a motoring theme. when changing the oil in a Ford Escort, do not overfill it by a couple of litres. The resulting cloud of smoke when driving down the motorway probably bought global warming forward 10 years.

DO remember to bog the car AFTER you have sanded it.it will stick better, and not fall off in clumps!

redden39, Jan 4, 9:43pm
Too funny. Hutchk, I have done the masking tape one and I know it is a common mistake.I have learned that heat guns and aluminium windowframes are not buddies.I have also learned it is unwise to use the hammer end to wrench a screw embedded in the dwang when there is gib board below.

hutchk, Jan 4, 9:50pm
How true. also, when removing scotia with a pinch bar, try to do it over a stud if a large hole in the gib is not the effect you were looking for.

Happy birthday the best thread on the whole board.

Ha Ha, we used to have to wear the chuck key round our necks on a string for the rest of the day if we ever did that.

Cold chisels can be used to cut the reinforcing rods in the middle of the concrete surround to a coal range. The broken window also gives you a good indication of the trajectory the cold chisel followed after hitting it with a sledge hammer.

If your overflow pipe is dribbling, get it repaired before winter. In the middle of winter, the flow across the carport roof from the overflow pipe will freeze progressively into a layer some 3 inches thick. Then, when you turn on the carport light, it will melt the bottom layer which then is forced back up between the sheets of iron roofing and leak through the ceiling. This will happen last thing at night, at which time you have to get onto the roof and bash all the ice away. Again, not something the neighbours appreciate, especially the one across the road with the pink dressing gown and the filthy mouth.

dont'pull an afternoon sickie & pick at the lounge wall paper , it will pull the plaster off the walls & cost you a bomb to fix LOL that afternoon off cost us $1000's in the end

dont hang doors in a new house untill the timber is pretty dry, other wise all your hard work MAY be undone.

gaba1, Jan 5, 12:53am
BEFORE investigating the pressure of the piddling shower, and pulling the shower head to bits, make sure you know where to turn the water off, and make sure youturn the water off!

redden39, Jan 5, 12:53am
Don't try hanging doors by yourself If your doors are six foot tall and heavy and you are 5 foot tall and light.Your feet are not suitable substitutes for wedges when hanging any doors.
