I have been feeding the birds outside my kitchen window with clementine mandarins, the wax eyes visit but with them is a bird of similar colour its olive green all over, and a little bigger it has a beak like a tui,i know you are going to ask for a photo but when i move they all fly away. The tui's also come and have a feed. All the birds are hungry at this time of year.
This is a bellbird, I took this pic yesterday at the Otorohanga Kiwi House.

Good on you for feeding them :-) I get annoyed that they tend to eat a lot of my chicken's food this time of year but then I realise they are hungry too so I don't mind so much.
I think your bird is probably a bellbird. They love fruit and if pushed will feed on the ground. Birds don't always conform to their commonly observed behaviour. Kokako, for example, are a typically high-canopy species but have been observed feeding and playing on the ground. Birds adapt so readily to their needs and if you have hungry bellbirds in your area I'm sure they would be coming along to feast on the mandarins! You're really lucky. Try to get a photo!

Sorry i forgot about the thread, the birds are beside my kitchen window which is two stories high I am threading the mandarins in the top of the apricot tree. i think it was a bellbird going by the beak. I am now stewing apple and putting it in the empty mandarin shells the tuis are liking that. They also like mashed banana.
