the flashing is 4metres long, as we had a leak inside at door, the roofer we contacted asked for a $250.00 call out fee, and if it could be repaired for this price ok, but if more they would quote and send us a email. Hell this sure seems alot, what do you people reckon. Yes we know nothing is cheap.

$250 call out fee seems a wee bit extravagant

They can charge what they want or you wait forever and they know it.

I once charged $150 for a 5.00 am call out on Sunday and felt bad about that . $250 is outrageous

can you not measure up, draw a profile of the flashing you need, and get it made.then if you cant replace it yourself, then get a builder to do it, $250.00 call out, he will still have to do as above.

More and more people are charging for call outs and quotes now that everyone is so busy but $250 is a bit steep

I would say @ $250 call out fee the "builder" not interested

"$250.00 call out fee, and if it could be repaired for this price ok" sounds like the $250 included some time on the job. Depends on how much time, a lot of appliance repair call out fees only include the first 15 mins.

Thanks for replies. The owner/builder is old and cannot climb up the ladder, but he had the flashing made,

We had a plumber working next door, prior to him arriving I had asked his boss if he could look at a proposed job for us which he did, he spent 30 mins here, his boss wants to charge us two hrs for this estimate, Thats not going to happen.

Amazing, This roofer in his text gave us his bank account no. to deposit the $250 fee and then he would come out and check job. Thats not going to happen.

The roofer probably has more than enough work on and dosen't want to waste his time going to look at a job that he might end up not doing and getting nothing for his time. My husband is a self employed tradesman and on occasion what the customer describes on the phone as a simple job can turn out quite complicated, those are the jobs he wishes he never took on because you always end up out of pocket on them.

When I was self employed I was honest with people about being too busy to be able to help, in a lot of instances they were happy to wait or to call in a month or two to see how things are going, I generally ended up being able to do these jobs. People appreciate being told straight up.

In my experience as a tradie, there those who are tyre kickers & those who want something fixed at a reasonable price.Often on getting to a job I have found that the repair requires further work to remedy the situation & also those that don’t,most customers are reasonable & once explained are happy for the work to continue.I can see where the company contacted want to cover costs as that is what they are in business for. Also many customers don’t fully understand the ramifications of making repairs, some just focus on how much is it going to cost.If you want to get something repaired by a tradie ask around, you don’t have to use the 1st bloke who comes along.

If your busy & dont really want the job you give a high quote , if do get it then make few extra $$ out of it . Common practice for trades .

I have to ask, if the owner builder is to old to climb the ladder, how did he measure it? Hope he didnt guess! Since the roofer is not supplying the materials, it looks as though he's trying to make his markup from the $250 fee.

Hi, have just asked the old builder how he measured it, his reply, the rafters are at 600 centres and there are 7 rafters, leaving 6 gaps x 600 equals 3.6, and he ordered a 4 metre flashing.

$250 is not that bad really if hes going to install the flashing while hes there. Would you get in your car and drive somewhere, unpack your gear, do the job (could take an hour), pack up and drive to the next one? None of our guys would

the majority of the public have no idea how things are in the tradie world. I quite often get jobs where the client states "it should take no longer than an hour to do"-and could be a job like remove an exterior door and replace with a new solid core door and supply a new mortice lock. And then pick the bill to bits questioning everything ,On those always give a very detailed breakdown

I always used to give those types a wink and tell them they should have done it themselves.
