New gib must be sealed after stopping and before painting. If a bathroom, preferably pigmented sealer or alkyd wallboard sealer (both oil based). Otherwise a good quality acrylic wallboard sealer (Resene or Dulux). Then sanded, dusted and 2 coats of appropriate wall paint. Peter

Thanks' I haven't done this new gib thing for years.I did assume that both paper and paint coverage would need a sealer underneath. Now I know I'm not the der brain some of the advisors treated me as. Cheers all.

Piggy backing off this. what sort of roller should one use to apply the sealer?. I have used a foam one previously but it seems to take forever and leave some sharp edges to be rerolled.
