I always cut mine well back in the winter.To about 12 inches high.Much like roses.It stops them getting woody,and keeps them compact.If you dont they will get leggy and not flower well,the following season.

I dead head when the flowers turn brown at the gardening jobs that I do just to keep them looking neat. I then cut them back hard in winter.
^ I think the poster meant that you can spray them a colour, then dry them!Correct me if I'm wrong!
