Asparagus

Planted some asparagus last month. Do they sprout thin and grow fatter, or sprout fat and grow taller? Have one about 400mm high but really thin.

Some stalks are fat & some are thin & that's just the way they are & stay . apart from growing taller.
They all taste good. in fact I have trouble getting them into the kitchen, I tend to eat them raw!

Oohh yes samanya. little ones raw are yummo. We have just planted some purple asparagus this year. We have had ordinary green for years so decided to try the purple as it is supposed to be sweeter and good in salads.

If you only planted the corms recently you should leave them to grow this season rather than harvest them. We planted about 30 plants just over a year ago and this spring they are cropping magnificantly. Our are 2/3 Washington, 1/3 purple and the purple are a bit slower to start cropping but some spears are now as thick as my thumb and the taste is definitely better than the green ones, especially raw.
