a little early yet, crown planting is usually October and November, most garden centers will have them closer to that time, avoid planting after Jan as the crowns don't get the opportunity to develop enough strength prior to that first winter

they are gross feeders, now would be a good time to cultivate the area well, and deep, way deeper than normal garden practice ( they will send roots down to 1 mt depths in search of nutrient and water) and incorporate plenty of nutrient in readiness, good luck, enjoy your fresh asparagus for the next 25-40 yrs

I have a 3 -4 yr old bed & I have fertilsed the bejeezus out of it & have been restrained on the picking so far . but still not a prolific crop. What is the best fertliser/feed in your experience? I've used seaweed juice/tea,( I understand that it has derived from the sea plant originally) small amounts of chook shite & home made compost.

it grows as a weed in coastal areas of Denmark and Holland, still does, and still a nuisance to them
it likes a balance of fert, when did you last put some lime on it, sounds like you may have it super rich and have upset the ph balance, it also requires lots of good sun and doesn't tolerate cold feet in the growing season - can take lots of snow during winter but needs good sun to grow, even reflecting sun back at it by placing a glasshouse in an appropriate position will help
Been while since I was commercially growing it, at home I just use nitrophos blue, or a bag of dap 30, same as hipot

Hmmm. It's not in full sun all year around. I put a sprinkling of lime on it a few months ago. Maybe in spring I'll have a better crop.
Thanks for your advice.
