Main water valve

Just thought of this. We had a water leak between the floors. Had a plumber in. With the main water tap is it suppose to be opened all the way, if it is fully opened it won't damage the pipes would it?

Cheers.

'All the way' may give you too much pressure.

I would try half way and check the pressure at the kitchen sink and shower; just adjust until it suits. The water pipes should be fine with that.

With no flow anywhere the water pressure will be at maximum reguardless of how much the tap is on, even on slightly. When there is a flow the half turned of tap will not allow enough water through to maintain pressure so it will drop in the whole system

I turn the main water tap all the way on, and back a slight amount. So anyone knows whether it is turned off or on.
The pressure is the same whether it's 100% on or 25% on, but the maximum flow will be reduced if it's not fully on.

THIS. Also keeping the tap turned off just a little way helps prevent it from binding in place and making it very hard to turn off when needed.

Yes it should be fully open

If your water pressure is too high, you could get the plumber to fit a reducer.
